Application
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to assist continuous flight auger drilling in Resources and Infrastructure Industry.
This unit is appropriate for those working in drillers assistant roles.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
|
1 Plan and prepare for assisting with continuous flight auger drilling
|
1.1 Access, interpret and apply assist continuous flight auger drilling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
1.4 Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment and protective clothing
1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
1.6 Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
1.7 Load, unload, move, handle, use and store continuous flight augers and all associated tools, sampling devices and connecting equipment
1.8 Set up and stabilise auger racks

2 Assist with augering process
|
2.1 Fit and remove bits to and from the lead auger
2.2 Lay out auger string in readiness for auger process
2.3 Insert remove augers from the drill string and assist with auger to auger connections
2.4 Regularly maintain cleanliness around the hole collar by removing spoil only when rotation is stopped
2.5 Observe housekeeping and site safety measures while conducting auger assistance and sampling duties

3 Obtain samples
|
3.1 Obtain and/or lay out disturbed samples from flights as required
3.2 Take necessary safety precautions when handling potentially contaminated samples
3.3 Bag, label and store undisturbed samples for transport
3.4 Obtain soil samples from SPT split spoon, undisturbed sample tube, direct push, coring bit or other down hole mechanical device used in sampling
3.5 Package SPT samples and label packages and include the test result
3.6 Clean and service undisturbed tubes, remove loose spoil, fit mechanical or wax seals, package, label and store undisturbed samples for transport
3.7 Remove and package samples obtained from hollow auger sampling devices or direct push applications when required

4 Clean equipment
|
4.1 Clean and reassemble sampling devices and associated equipment
4.2 Use high pressure cleaners and/or steam cleaning equipment to clean augers and equipment
4.3 Avoid or confine the spread of contamination from auger and equipment cleaning processes.
4.4 Follow safe work practices for use of cleaning equipment, chemicals and materials.
4.5 Bag, remove and dispose of or neutralise excess spoil from site operations

5 Carry out water sampling
|
5.1 Bail or pump holes in preparation for collection of water sample
5.2 Prepare, obtain and handle water sample bottles
5.3 Obtain a water sample from a bore hole
5.4 Fill, seal, label, store and transport correct volume water samples relevant for the analytical purpose or tests required using appropriate type containers
5.5 Remove or dispose of or neutralise excess water generated by sampling or cleaning processes that may be contaminated or harmful to the environment, plants, native animals, domestic stock or people

6 Carry out basic maintenance of tools and equipment
|
6.1 Perform inspection and checks on serviceability of augers including condition of flights, threads, socket connectors, D clips and bits
6.2 Inspect serviceability of pressure cleaning equipment, water sampling pumps, sample tubes, SPT equipment
6.3 Maintain all auger and sampling equipment in serviceable condition
6.4 Conduct housekeeping activities

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
- implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient assisting with continuous flight auger drilling including:
- operating ancillary equipment
- applying basic maintenance and servicing of auxiliary equipment
- measuring and identifying flight auger components
- identifying thread types in use on site
- identifying bits in use and how to measure them
- applying safe storage of tools
- using load handling equipment on site
- assisting the driller in the removal and adding of drill rods to the line string
- refuelling vehicles, drill rigs and ancillary equipment
- identifying and applying correct lubricants
- handling of samples
- conducting housekeeping
- installing restraining devices to pressure and delivery hoses
- identification of bits to suit differing ground conditions
- works effectively with others to undertake and complete the continuous flight auger drilling tasks that meets all of the required outcomes including:
- complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements throughout work activities
- demonstrates completion of assisting continuous flight auger drilling that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
- fitting and removing bits to and from the lead auger
- laying out auger string in readiness for auger process
- inserting removing augers from the drill string and assisting with auger to auger connections
- bagging, labelling and storing undisturbed samples for transport
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in assisting continuous flight auger drilling through:
- accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:
- work, health and safety
- environment issues
- grouting drill hole
- acid base sample preservation of groundwater samples
- field measurement of temperature, pH, specific conductance
- safety measures for sampling contaminated sites and landfills
- chain of custody, including use of seals, field log book, chain of custody record, sample labels and sample request forms
- decontamination of sampling equipment, sample containers, pumps
- volatile organic compound vials
- test bore and well abandonment
- basic soil description methods
- preparing for sampling of contaminated site
- identifying and applying sampling methods using SPTs, thin walled samplers, continuous sampling system method, hand augers, trowels
- identifying and applying groundwater sampling protocols and types of sampling tools
- identifying the reasons for identification and care of samples including storage and transport
- calculation of volume in cylinders, tanks
Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
- assessment may be conducted in conjunction with the assessment of other Units of Competency; and,
- assessment must confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances; and,
- assessors must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through the minimum years of current* work experience specified below in an Industry sector relevant to the outcomes of the unit; or,
- where the assessor does not meet experience requirements a co-assessment or partnership arrangement must exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry subject matter expert. The Industry subject matter expert should hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit) and/or demonstrate equivalence of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate skills and knowledge from the minimum years of current work experience specified below in the Industry sector, including time spent in roles related to the unit being assessed; and,
- assessor and Industry subject matter expert requirements differ depending on the Australian Qualifications Framework Level (AQF) of the qualification being assessed and/or Industry Sector as follows:

Where this Unit is being assessed outside of the Resources and Infrastructure Sectors assessor and/or Industry subject matter expert experience should be in-line with industry standards for the sector in which it is being assessed and where no Industry standard is specified should comply with any relevant regulation.

*Assessors can demonstrate current work experience through employment within Industry in a role relevant to the outcomes of the Unit; or, for external assessors this can be demonstrated through exposure to Industry by conducting frequent site assessments across various locations.
